  • Higher Cost: Custom loops are much more, usually hundreds of pounds more expensive than air coolers or even AIO coolers. AIO coolers are a lot more cost effective & some are on par with air coolers when it comes to price & performance.

However, there isn’t usually a huge jump in price between a lower end air or AIO cooler and something with a bit more oomph, Intel i7 gaming PC’s do tend to run hotter than other CPUs and need a more robust cooling solution, so we always recommend not skimping on this part of your build.

Noise Levels

If a quiet gaming environment is a priority, liquid cooling is often the preferred choice due to its quieter operation. However, many modern air coolers are designed with noise reduction in mind, so it is possible to find a suitable air cooling solution that operates quietly.

Airflow, Contact frames & voltage.

Contact frames

We add contact frames to all our intel core i7 gaming PCs, contact frames are a metal frame that holds the CPU in place instead of the standard motherboard holder.

This ensures that the CPU is held as flat as possible which then allows a much greater contact between the cooler and the CPU, thus allows a better heat transfer, better temperatures and all round better cooling.

We do this and a few other mods to our intel i7 gaming PCs including under-volting.

Under-volting

Under-volting is a form of overclocking but instead of getting more performance the aim is to get better control of the electrical power being exerted by the processor.

CPU’s, especially the i7 & Intel Core i9 variants can run out of the factory with more power than their advertised TDP. So we will pull this back down to a balanced level where you don’t lose performance but also allows for much better cooling and temperatures.

Airflow

Another important factor in your Intel i7 gaming PC is the airflow. This needs to be thought out carefully as it can have a big impact of the thermal performance of your i7 gaming desktop.

Airflow is the way your PC moves hot air out of the case & fresh air in, you don’t want stagnant hot air inside your PC as this will cause temperatures to rise because the surrounding temperatures are only going up instead of flowing at a steady rate.

There are different types of airflow pressure, positive pressure where you have more fans pulling air in, negative pressure where you have more fans pulling air out and neutral airflow where you have the same airt pressure going in and out. You ideally want to air for a neutral airflow, actual neutral airflow is extremely difficult to achieve so we get as close as we can and then aim on the side of positive pressure. In short:

Positive airflow can reduce the amount of dust sucked in by the PC keeping it cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing and requiring maintenance less often while still retaining cooling performance

Negative airflow can provide better cooling performance at the cost of sucking dust in and requiring more regular maintenance.

Positive vs negative airflow is something that’s highly debated within the PC building community but for most users it comes down to personal preference.
